What is Kootenay Rideshare?
Kootenay Rideshare is a community platform that helps residents of the Kootenay region share rides for people, pets, and goods. It is a project of the West Kootenay EcoSociety, aimed at reducing travel costs and greenhouse gas emissions.
How do I find a ride?
Visit the View Rides page to browse available journeys. Rides are organized into long-distance trips, local rides, and frequent commuter carpools. You can look for a driver heading your way and reach out to coordinate.
How do I offer a ride?
Use the Post a Ride page to list your trip. You can specify whether it's a one-time long-distance journey, a local trip, or a recurring commute. Sharing your ride helps offset vehicle operating costs and reduces emissions.
Does the site screen drivers or passengers?
No. Kootenay Rideshare does not perform background checks, reference checks, or any form of user screening. All arrangements are made at your own discretion. We encourage you to review our Safety & Etiquette guidelines before participating.
Is there a cost to use the site?
The platform is free to use. It is volunteer-run and supported by the West Kootenay EcoSociety. If you find the service valuable, you can make a small donation to help keep it running.
Can I get help over the phone?
Because Kootenay Rideshare is a volunteer-run project with no funding for staff, we are generally unable to respond to individual inquiries. We cannot post rides over the phone — you'll need to use the website. If you've had a safety concern, please contact local police.
What about seniors?
There are dedicated resources for seniors looking for transportation assistance. Drivers willing to help can also offer a lift to a senior through the platform.
Still have questions? While we cannot guarantee a response, you can find our contact details on the Contact page. For safety issues, please contact local authorities directly.
